The routine official death statistics fail to provide timely, accurate information on the extent of deaths and AIDS deaths. However, it has been observed that the age pattern of deaths is rapidly changing, largely as a result of HIV/AIDS. Together with models, these data provide trend profiles that can be used to assess the impact of HIV/AIDS on mortality in South Africa.
