The provincial mortality study made use of the 15% sample of causes of death released by Statistics South Africa for 1997-2001 to develop a mortality profile for each of South Africa's nine provinces.
Adjustments have been made to allow for the under-registration of deaths and misclassification of causes.
The study provides comparable estimates of the mortality levels experienced in the provinces as well as cause-specific death rates.
