Unsafe water, lack of sanitation and poor hygiene are key risk factors for diarrhoeal and other infectious diseases. In South Africa, Census 2001 data shows that 14% of households have no toilet facility, 4% use buckets and 23% use pit latrines with no ventilation. These are inadequate forms of sanitation that increase risk of diarrhoeal and parasitic diseases, particularly affecting children.
This study estimates the burden of disease attributable to unsafe water, sanitation and hygiene by sex and age group for South Africa in 2000 using the comparative risk assessment methodology developed by the WHO. View the results. (pdf format, 278 kb)
