The compilation of cause of death statistics has been ongoing in the City of Cape Town for more than a century. The system was revamped in 2000 to provide a more informative set of statistics for public health planning and monitoring. Together with the Western Cape Provincial Department of Health, the system has been extended to the Boland/Overberg Health Region in 2005 and plans are underway to extend the system to the other health regions.
