the mandate of the MRC ethics committee

  1. When and MRC unit/group is attached to a university, the MRC accepts the ethics clearance of the home university - e.g. the Dental Research Institute at Wits, provided the MRC is happy with the composition and functioning of the home university's Ethics Committee.
  2. When an MRC unit is physically alongside a university, e.g. the HIV Prevention Trial Group in Natal, they may choose which Ethics Committee to go through for pure MRC research - in this case either the University of Natal Ethics Committee or the MRC Ethics Committee.
  3. When an MRC staff member is based at Medicina, that person applies to the MRC Ethics Committee for in-house MRC research as well as for any collaborative research outside Medicina.
