rural/urban
nutrition-related differentials among adult population groups
in South Africa, with special emphasis on the black population.

In South
Africa the black population predominates by far over other population
sub-groups ) and is the most impoverished of all groups. The
majority are increasingly based in urban areas, many in informal
housing on the fringes of cities. Consequently over time, most
studies on nutritional status and dietary intakes have focussed
on blacks.
However
these studies have primarily focussed on preschool children
in rural areas since they represent the most vulnerable age
group. Nevertheless it could be argued that since adults determine
intakes of very young children, examinations of their diets
and nutritional status have been warranted.
An investigation
into the adult population of South Africa utilising census data
closest to the period during which most studies were performed,
revealed that the 1985 census population figures were most appropriate.
These figures were projected to a 1990 population aged 15-64
years by using population figures for 1990.
