about the novel drug development platform

This project seeks to establish a scientific biotechnology infrastructure in South Africa for research and development of novel medicines and tonics from traditional medicinal plants used in southern Africa.

It brings together leading institutions, viz, the South African Medical Research Council (MRC), Agricultural Research Council (ARC), CSIR, South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), University of Cape Town (UCT), University of Pretoria (UP), University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban (UKZN) and University of Limpopo, University of Johannesburg (formerly RAU) and scientists with the necessary expertise for capitalising on the country's rich botanical, scientific and human resources.

This project was awarded to the consortium by the Innovation Fund Technology Missions which seeks to fund high risk, early stage, technology development research with a potential for future/broad economic benefits.
