Different
people like different foods and like to prepare the same foods
in different ways. Culture, family background, religion, moral
beliefs, cost, convenience and availability of food, life experiences,
food intolerances, and allergies affect people's food choices.
There are 5 food groups from which to choose a variety of foods.
Foods are grouped based on having a similar nutrient content.
No foods need to be excluded from the diet of healthy active
people; rather healthier choices should be made and foods eaten
in moderate quantities.
The
groups are:-
Bread,
cereals, rice and pasta
Vegetables
and Fruit
Milk,
cheese and other dairy products
Meat,
poultry, fish, eggs, dry beans and nuts
Fats,
sweets and alcoholic beverages
To
help you make better choices, the foods have been sub-divided
into Eat
more of and
Eat
less of .
An eating plan can be designed using the choices to include
food that you like, and other foodsthat you could learn to like, that are available,
nutritious and within your budget.
