- Genetic link could say why some get TB
Research by the MRC/US Centre for Mollecular and Cellular Biology has helped identify a new genetic link to people's susceptibility to tuberculosis (TB). Tuberculosis, which kills two million people every year, is caused by a bacterium that is so widespread in South Africa that most people have been exposed to it. Yet, only ten per cent of those infected develop the disease.
- Faster TB treatment sees the light
A new combination treatment for TB is set to ‘dramatically’ reduce the six months it usually takes to cure TB patients. The phase II clinical trials of the treatment were conducted by the MRC in Durban.
