National
Injury Costing Project
The economic
costs and consequences of morbidity and mortality in South Africa
is currently being investigated by a costing research consortium
comprising the UNISA Institute for Social and Health Science
(ISHS), the University of Natal (NU), the Medical Research Council
(MRC), the University of the Transkei (UNITRA) and the Red Cross
Children's Hospital. The pilot instruments for the study will
reach completion by the end of 2001. The implementation of the
project at 6 selected health facility sites will yield data
for analysis by the end of June 2002.
MRC/WHO
Collaborative Study on Injuries and Alcohol
The
MRC in South Africa represents one of 12 other countries (mostly
from the developing world) participating in a collaborative
study with the WHO in order to form an effective system of relevant
data collection:
- to define
the nature and extent of alcohol involvement in non-fatal
injuries among emergency room attendees; and
- to test
the ability of emergency room staff to assess and record the
degree of alochol intoxication in patients using the ICD-10
Y91 coding.
