neighbourhood-based safety promotion and capacitation for organisational management in safety promotion

The Lead Programme will examine the development, implementation and efficacy  of the safety promotion initiatives hosted in low-income neighbourhoods in Johannesburg, and the Strand, in the Western Cape. A range of safety promotion programmes are coordinated by a team comprising community and service organisations  and the ISHS. Currently the ISHS is evaluating the effectiveness of the Johannesburg health and safety promotion teams at three levels:

  • a group process evaluation;
  • the evaluation of achievement of internal objectives; and
  • the evaluation of the group's impact on the community.

In addition, the ISHS  has commissioned a safety audit of low income housing to assess the type and  prevalence of home-based injuries; an evaluation of the effectiveness of traffic  safety measures introduced as part of the national Traffic Visibility Campaign;  and an assessment of the effectiveness of advocacy and lobbying mechanisms  to affect environmental change. The ISHS is also examining the impact of incentivisation schemes for volunteer workers in low-income contexts, with the aim of developing an incentivisation scheme to foster long-term sustainability of safety promotion groups. The ISHS will assess capacity for inclusion in the incentivisation  scheme and methods of evaluating performance.
